- The Swiss Alps contains over 65,000km of hiking trails. If you did a new hike every weekend for your entire life, you would never finish them all.
- The following is a short guide to hiking there.
How to Use
- I am not a mountain guide or outdoor safety expert, and this content is intended as an informal introduction—not as professional or comprehensive advice.
- Mountain conditions can change rapidly, and even seemingly easy routes can become dangerous due to weather, snowmelt, or exposure. Before setting out, always check official sources like MeteoSwiss, SAC Route Portal, and local tourism offices.
- If you’re new to alpine hiking, or unsure about a route, consider hiring a qualified guide. Your safety is your responsibility—research thoroughly, know your limits, and don’t underestimate the mountains.
- This guide is for summer hiking. Winter hiking is much more dangerous, requires more knowledge and experience, and comes with a lot of other considerations that I do not have the knowledge to write on.

| LEGEND |
| • Red trails are T1-T3 difficult, blue trails are T4-T6 difficulty (see later). • The red house icons are alpine huts • The green peaks are hiking peaks, the blue peaks are ski tour peaks, the purple peaks are alpine peaks, the multicolor peaks have multiple options. |

| DATA LAYERS |
![]() |
| • These maps are very detailed and accurate. • They contain many layers. Above I’ve shown the winter snow depth level. • The above mountains have very deep snow and are quite steep. • These would be considered extremely dangerous to climb in winter due to avalanche risk. |
| SAC MOUNTAIN AND ALPINE HIKING SCALE |
| • The SAC Mountain and Alpine Hiking Scale ranges from T1 (easy hiking) to T6 (demanding alpine hiking) • It providing a standardized way to assess trail difficulty in the Swiss Alps. • I would say that in general, T4 is when the hikes start to become stressful and not for beginners. |

| PEAK INFORMATION |
| • Say that I want to summit the Zindelspitz. I simply click on the green hiking peak icon. • It says there is 1 mountain hiking route, and 1 archived route • Archived routes are routes from old hiking texts. |
![]() |
| PEAK ROUTES |
| • If I click on the hiking route, it shows me the different options and their difficulties. • In this case, the only documented route is T5- which would be a “difficult alpine hiking” route. • It takes 5h up, and 2h down. These time estimates are pretty accurate in general for a fit individual. |

| ROUTE INFORMATION |
| • When I click on this route, it gives me more details and a route description. • These are usually in German and need to be translated. |
![]() |
| ADDITIONAL INFORMATION |
| • They will also give you additional details and waypoints. • Notice that there is also a public transport link! |
![]() |
| PUBLIC TRANSIT |
| • Let’s plan a hike for Wednesday morning. • It’s summer, so the sun sets quite late. • If we arrive at the start of the hike at 9am, then we’ll have sufficient time. |

| KOMOOT – Custom routes and tracking |
| • Komoot is great tool for making your own routes (rather than relying on SAC), navigation/ tracking, etc. • It has a web and mobile version. The app is linked to Strava. • I have dozens of hike plans saved on Komoot that I will hopefully get to one day! Here is an example. |
![]() |
| • As you can see, it has very detailed route information including the steepness and SAC trail rating at every point. • It has user provided pictures for reference and inspiration. • You can download a GPX file for the route (GPS coordinates), and navigate a hike that you’ve planned from your mobile phone. |
![]() |
| • As you can see, I have tons of planned hikes! |
![]() |
| SWISSTOPO APP – Mobile App to Access Swiss Trail Info |
| • The SwissTopo app can also give you access to trail and routing information on the go. • You can download maps for offline use. Often cell reception isn’t reliable in the mountains. |

| METEOSWISS WEATHER |
| • The next step is to check the weather on MeteoSwiss • MeteoSwiss is the official national weather service. • It provides high-resolution forecasts, real-time radar and satellite imagery. • This is considered the most accurate forecast. |
![]() |
| NEARBY WEATHER |
| • So unfortunately there is no weather forecast for Zindelnspitz • But there is a forecast for nearby place. We can use the Schubelbach weather: 10-21C. |
![]() |
| FORECAST FOR HIKE DAY |
| • Lots of thunderstorm on Wednesday! This would normally be a no-go, but this is just an example.4 • The thunderstorms are predicted to stop in the afternoon, but this cannot be guaranteed. • We also know that Zildenspitz is 2100m above sea level, and Schubelbach is 400m. • Temperature drops above 6.5C per 1000m of elevation. Mountain weather is also temperamental. • We should be prepared for at minimum for -3C to 8C at the summit! |
![]() |
| METEOBLUE WEATHER |
| • We can also check Meteoblue • Meteoblue has more localized forecasts but is considered less accurate. • This temperature estimate seems reasonable, but a little higher than our estimate. |
![]() |
| METEOBLUE WEBCAMS |
| • Meteoblue also has nearby webcams so we can get a better feel for conditions. |
![]() |
| WEBCAM VIEW |
| • The webcam image of Wagital is quite overcast and foggy. We don’t see much snow thankfully. |
