Weather Check Check HRRR Model on Windy and talk to staff. This is critical. Check every time and ask staff what the conditions are.
I use www.Windy.com. Specifically I use HRRR weather model for accurate, high-resolution, short-term forecasts.
Sunglasses Polarized sunglasses. It is extremely bright when sailing. You get the light from the sun, and the reflection from the water. The only shade is the sail itself.
You want polarized sunglasses. Polarized sunglasses will specifically block reflected light, such as light reflected from the water.
However any sunglasses are better than none.
Sunscreen Sports sunscreen. Ideally you would have sports sunscreen with high SPF. Sports sunscreen is needed because it will be more resistance to water.
You need to reapply every 80 minutes ideally.
I use Banana Boat Sport Ultra SPF 65 Sunscreen Lotion: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GQMZ1Q4/
Sandals/ Shoes Sandals or wet shoes. You don’t technically need shoes. Sandals should be sufficient.
Barefoot is also fine. However there is coral that you have to walk over to reach the boat in Miami.
Clothing Long sleeve rash shirt.
Swimming shorts or pants.
Soft shell when colder or windier.
Unless you are on a yacht, assume you’re going to get wet.
Even when it’s a relatively warm day, when you are wet and the wind is evaporating the water from your skin, you can get quite cold.
If you’re cold, you won’t have fun.
It is not always possible to return to shore quickly.
Synthetic material is best because it retains warmth when wet.
For this reason and for sun protection, long sleeve synthetic rash shirts are best.
I would also recommend synthetic swimming shorts or pants.
When it is colder or windier, a rash shirt may not be enough. Bring a rain jacket or soft shell.
If you get cold easily, bring more than you need.
Water 1L per hour. If you’re thirsty you won’t have fun. Bring more than you need.
Someone will forget and you’ll have to share if you bring a small amount.
Phone protection Waterproof phone bag. Salt water will destroy the rubber seals that keep your phone waterproof. It doesn’t matter if it is IPX rated.
This is the one I use. It is the best. Pelican Marine – IP68 Waterproof Phone Pouch / Case (Regular Size) – Floating Waterproof Phone Case https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GHX26KF/
Dry Clothing & Towel Maybe want to bring an extra waterproof bag for your dry stuff.
Leave your dry stuff one shore! Keep your stuff away from sand and water.
